Why Unless?

Like most mothers, everything changed once my daughter was born.
Growing up I was what I like to refer to as a “green nerd”.  I made sure everything was recycled, that my parents only bought green cleaning products and if possible my school projects were about saving a park or wilderness area.
The few years before Amber was born I had gotten away from my green nerd roots.  I still recycled, made sure we bought green cleaning products and tried to buy local or organic food when possible.  But I had lost part of the passion that goes along with being a green nerd.  I had become indifferent towards most environmental issues and discouraged as I could not believe that there were still people in this world who did not believe that global warming was real.
Amber arriving into this world changed all that.  She became my inspiration for making a difference and gave me a reason to fight again.  I know that not everyone is going to believe in global warming.  I know that not everyone is going to bring their recycling home from vacation, but that doesn’t mean that I have to give up.  The more people, like me, who believe in a future for our children, the better off we will be.  I want my daughter and son (and grandchildren) to have a planet with wildlife, clean rivers, clean air and fresh food.
I am choosing to fight to make our world a better place.  That is why I started Unless Market.
The purpose behind Unless Market is to change the way that people shop.  To offer a wide selection of products from unique local businesses.   To offer locally made products that you know are clean and safe for both your loved ones and the environment; because we have done the research for you.   To reduce our plastic consumption by offering the clean and safe body and household products in refillable containers.  And to provide a place for people to be able to buy eco-friendly products that help eliminate the use of single use plastic.
I believe that we should be banning single use plastic.  Especially straws, bags and water bottles.  Until that happens, I want to offer people alternatives.  Unless Market now carries three different kinds of reusable straws.  We have a great selection of mason jar products that support waste conscious living.  Not to mention abeego which replaces saran wrap!  However, my favourite eco-friendly product at the moment is the pot scrubbie that is made from coconut fibre.  Once the scrubbie is worn out you just put in your compost.
I have found my green nerd passion in Unless Market.  I am someone who cares and wants to make a difference.  I realize that I am only one person, but I am one person who is willing to fight to make things better.
The name Unless Market was inspired by Dr Suess and his book “The Lorax”.  The saying goes like this…. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It’s not.”
